The EarlyAct Clubs of Montego Bay, working with the Rotaractors of Montego Bay in October of last year raised over JA$200,000 with their Coin Collection Drive. The funds were raised for the Norwood Basic School in Norwood, Montego Bay. The Rotarian Magazine featured this success in its April 2010 issue of World Round Up.

Rotarian Natasha Parchment-Clarke had bribed her friend Sophia Alexandropoulos with a belly full if she would spend the morning driving her mini-bus to collect donated children’s clothes from schools in Montego Bay with EarlyAct clubs and deliver them to the Salvation Army headquarters. So over a hearty homemade breakfast, the route was planned, appointments were made and then the duo set off with Maxi Priest energizing them on the stereo.

The first stop was Naz Children’s Centre in Ironshore where the children’s clothes drive began as an idea of the EarlyAct secretary – 7 year old O’Neil Campbell. The school secretary and the Principal appeared with bag after bag of clothing, shoes and blankets until the mini-bus was filled to capacity – the door was slammed shut and the bags pressed down so Sophia could see out the back.

Delighted with their bounty, Rotarian Natasha and Sophia chattered their way to the Salvation Army headquarters and deposited the donations of 22 bags and boxes at the entrance of the building. Volunteers marched out and took them into a passage between the Thrift Store and the sorting room.

Rotarian Natasha nosed around asking questions about the overwhelming amount of clothes and boxes piled from floor to ceiling in the warehouse sized room – “disaster supplies up the top along the back; baby bottle nipples to the side; cleaning supplies for emergency situations and the rest clothes, clothes and more clothes” stated a volunteer matter-of-factly, “We’ve had to close the Thrift Store to handle the volume of donations to Haiti ! We sent one truck load full to the Salvation Army in Kingston last week and will be doing the same again later this week - they’ll be shipping the items to Haiti”.

In the next room, 5 volunteers sorted through the mountain of clothes that surrounded them, discarding items of no use to anyone, especially the victims of an earthquake. Querying a volunteer about the quality of donations received regularly at the Salvation Army, Rotarian Natasha was shocked to hear about shirts with holes, pants with no zipper, single shoes not a pair, stained and stretched baby clothes and even dirty underwear. Sometimes, whole bags of donations seemed to be a household’s good-for-nothings that were delivered to the Salvation Army location instead of the Montego Bay dump.

Flabbergasted, Rotarian Natasha wandered into the back room of the building, an old nursery evidenced by the murals on the wall and to her surprise saw Rotarian Keri Johnson quietly and industriously packing and taping boxes for shipment to Haiti. The Secretary of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army Western Divisional Headquarters, Keri had spent many of the last few days volunteering at the West Green location filling box after box of generously donated supplies from hotels, businesses and individuals in Montego Bay. The one problem she now faced was boxes. The supply was running low and the sorting room had just been filled with a mini-van full of items to be sorted and packaged.

With a new mission, Sophia and Rotarian Natasha rolled out to collect the EarlyAct donations awaiting them and to source the much needed commodity – boxes. Lamenting the quality of some donations and the insurmountable task of sorting and packaging, the duo’s spirits were soothed by Diana Ross as they headed through Bogue traffic to Junior Plus school.

The School Secretary Colister Reid efficiently led us to the storage area where bags of clothes awaited collection. The Principal – Jane Harper was busy teaching and gave us a thumbs-up as we traipsed back and forth loading up the mini-bus.

Back on the road a selection of 80’s sing-alongs got Sophia and Rotarian Natasha to their next stop – Mega Mart to collect boxes. As luck would have it, merchandisers filled every aisle of the huge supermarket and as Sophia haggled with shelf-stockers for their biggest boxes, Rotarian Natasha requested a stash from the floor supervisor. After both avenues were exhausted, the ladies wheeled out 2 trolleys overflowing with boxes ranging in size from large to giant.

Triumphant, to the Bob Marley anthem “One Love” Rotarian Natasha and Sophia headed back to the Salvation Army where the boxes were graciously received and the load of donations taken in for sorting.

For the next leg of the journey Rotarian Natasha and Sophia brainstormed ways of raising awareness of the Thrift Store ; recruiting volunteers for sorting and re-opening the nursery that had been closed from lack of funds and children to support it.

Ideas were still flowing as they reached Montego Bay Prep School where Mrs. Hudson, EarlyAct Teacher Co-ordinator waited enthusiastically with her school’s donation which included clothes, tinned food and cash. The students who were enjoying morning break were eager to pose for the camera and receive thanks on behalf of The Rotary Club of Montego Bay and the children of Haiti. Rotarian Natasha and Sophia left the school with questions buzzing behind them “Are you from Haiti?” ; “How are the things going to get to Haiti?”

A short distance away, the last collection was made at Montego Bay Christian Academy. The Principal Jerry Winkler, EarlyAct Teacher co-ordinator Ms. Bowen and Early Act President Danea-Gay Williams were on hand to load up the mini-van. Mr. Winkler commented on the children’s active participation in the clothing drive and mentioned how they felt a real part of the relief effort knowing they had donated something personal to the children of Haiti

The donation collection warriors weaved their way through mid-day traffic in the centre of Montego Bay singing loudly to Prince as they made their final trip to the Salvation Army. The last dozen bags were offloaded and taken into the sorting room in instant-replay fashion by the volunteers who were grateful indeed for the donations, but gingerly asked “will there be any more?” Weary from the day’s activities, Sophia gladly stated “that’s all!”

As Rotarian Natasha was exiting the building, she noticed a bag of donated items gleaming in a clear ‘bed-in-a-bag’ plastic carrier from one of her trips. The clothes were clean, neatly folded and organized into piles of pants, shirts, boys and girls outfits and there were even some smaller bags inside containing nearly-new children’s underwear - this she thought must be from someone who had been a volunteer before and who really understands the meaning of donating clothes to those in need.

Hungry again after all the action, the donation duo devoured a tasty lunch and both declared that their bellies were indeed full, but not as full as their hearts after a day of “Service above Self” – Rotary style.

EARLYACT CLUB MEMBERS DO THEIR PART FOR THE EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

The day after the earthquake struck Haiti, a young 7 year old Montegonian began thinking about how he could personally help children just like himself who had been affected by the tragedy.

O’Neil Campbell, a student at Naz Children’s Centre in Ironshore decided to search through his closet at home and donate any clothes that did not fit him anymore to the children of Haiti.

As the secretary of the EarlyAct Club at Naz Children’s Centre, O’Neil and his idea were at the right place at the right time and when Natasha Parchment-Clarke, New Generations Co-ordinator for the Rotary Club of Montego Bay was told of O’Neil’s thoughtful gesture, her creative wheels began turning and the very next day she made phone calls, sent emails and visited schools broadcasting the plan:

EarlyActors present cheque to the Norwood Basic School

The Coin Collection Drive recently conducted by the EarlyAct Clubs in conjunction with the Rotaractors of Montego Bay culminated in a Family Fun Day Count Off on Sunday the 25th of October 2009 at the Cornwall Beach in Montego Bay.

The EarlyAct clubs raised a combined whopping total of J$ 200, 318.75!

"Just look what happens when Rotaractors plan and EarlyActors execute! I am excited about this effort put out by both Clubs together with the Rotary Club of Montego Bay and I am looking forward to this being an annual event of Rotaract & EarlyAct" said Natasha Parchment-Clarke, EarlyAct Co-ordinator.

The winning school, Junior Plus, collected over J$53,000, while the Montego Bay Christian Academy came in second with over J$22,000. Montego Bay Prep School was third with over J$20,751.60, Liceo Montessori fourth with over J$ 17,799.75. Greenwood Prep, Naz Children's centre and Edwards Prep combined brought in over $10,000.

There were all smiles at Liceo Montessori on Tuesday the 22nd of September as the EarlyAct Club Liceo Montessori hosted its first meeting of the term – topic 1 on the agenda being the Coin-Drive.

The EarlyActors made a pact to collect the most coins of the six schools participating in the drive scheduled for 19 Sep – 25 Oct including Greenwood Prep, Montego Bay Prep, Naz Children’s Centre, Edwards Prep and Montego Bay Christian Academy .

The young community service club members are looking forward to the coin-count-off at Cornwall Beach on Sun 25 Oct where the winning school will receive 50 free tickets to return to Cornwall Beach and have their collected coins figure matched by a local company in aid of the Norwood Basic School .

The EarlyAct Clubs of Liceo Montessori , Montego Bay Christian Academy and Montego Bay Prep have recently jumped on the Coin Collection Drive train!

EarlyActors at the Montego Bay Christian Academy were creative with their coin-drive collection tactics and were on hand at the first PTA meeting on Tue the 22nd of September with their jugs requesting donations.

Earlier in the week, the Principal endorsed the event by emailing parents about the coin-drive scheduled for 19 Sep – 25 Oct 2009.

To date six schools in Montego Bay are competing to collect coins in aid of Rotaract’s ongoing charity project, the Norwood Basic School . During the schools PTA meeting the community service project was highlighted as being a great way for students to provide “service above self”- the motto of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay, the parent club of both Rotaract and EarlyAct club activities under Rotary International.

The teachers and 24 members of the EarlyAct Club of Montego Bay Prep School are keen to begin their first project of the school year – a Coin-Drive, collecting coins for Norwood Basic School and the chance to receive 50 free entry tickets to Cornwall Beach – a competition that has already started between 6 schools in Montego Bay and will culminate at Cornwall Beach on Sun 25 Oct.

The team of Mobay Prep teachers are enthusiastic about the EarlyAct Club and are involved 100%. Visiting Rotarian Natasha Parchment-Clarke met with teachers Brown and Hudson who showed great enthusiasm for the Rotary procedures and protocol of conducting an EarlyAct meeting. “From the amount of trophies and awards the school has in their showcase, I can tell this club is going to be successful,” stated Rotarian Natasha as she left their premises on the 24th of September 2009.

In the heat of back-to-school excitement, the students of NAZ Children’s Centre had something else to celebrate – the formation of an EarlyAct Club at their school, making a total of 5 clubs in Montego Bay .

On Tuesday the 8th of September, 2009 Rotarian Natasha Parchment-Clarke was on hand as the students were selected for positions including President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer of their twice monthly after-school club that promotes “service above self” just like its sponsoring club The Rotary Club of Montego Bay.

The students were all the more thrilled to be a part of their first official ‘local community’ event, a Coin-Drive to collect money for Norwood Basic School, starting on 19 Sep and culminating in a family beach day at the newly-opened Cornwall Beach on 25 Oct.

Naz Children’s Centre is one of the 5 host schools that have an EarlyAct Club including Liceo Montessori, Greenwood Preparatory, Montego Bay Christian Academy and Montego Bay Preparatory and within the first week of school, another school has jumped on the Coin-Drive bus – namely Edwards Prep.

Exclaimed an involved parent from Edwards Prep, Sophie Alexandropolous: “This is a great project for my children and their school to be involved in – meaningful, yet fun. We are busy filling our jugs with coins and hope to win the competition, get our figure matched for the benefit of Norwood Basic and enjoy the 50 free entry tickets Cornwall Beach is giving away!”

The Newly Elected Executive Committee of the

Montego Bay Christian Academy EarlyAct Club

The first Committee meeting of The Montego Bay Christian Academy EarlyAct Club took place on Wednesday the 20th of May 2009.

Rotarian Natasha Parchment Clarke (back row far left) and President of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay, Kay Reuben (back row second left) attended the induction and first committee meeting of the Montego Bay Christian Academy EarlyAct Club.

Principal of the school, Jerry Winkler (back row far right) and Teacher co-ordinator Desmarie Bowen (back row second right) were part of the selection team at the school who chose the six committee members who were then voted into positions by their peers.

The first committee meeting had members of the newly elected executive practicing their new roles – calling the meeting to order, reading minutes, presenting the treasurer's report among other things. Everyone involved agreed that great times are ahead for this Club.

A very impressed President Kay said of the Earlyactors, “They carried out their duties so confidently, perhaps even better than some adults would have!”

The Launch of The Liceo Montessori EarlyAct Club

The Liceo Montessori EarlyAct Club was officially launched on Monday 18 May 2009 and its first committee members democratically elected. At this first official meeting the President of The Rotary Club of Montego Bay visited along with EarlyAct Chair Vernella Fuller and were very impressed with the club and the enthusiasm of its members. Each club member was thrilled to be a part of an official meeting and embraced their roles professionally.

The club members hosted an active fist meeting with the President Rhia calling the meeting to order and Recording secretary Zoe-Danielle (with the assistance of Vice President Jada) writing down the many ideas and comments made by the members. Corresponding Secretary Rae gave a delightful vote of thanks to the visitors and all club members eagerly await their next meeting, scheduled for Monday 1 June from 2:30 – 3:15pm.

EarlyAct Community Project

The Greenwood Preparatory School's EarlyAct Club carried out its community project on the 2nd of April 2009. This was a visit to the Eldercare Nursing Home in Wiltshire, Trelawny.

Participants were children from the school, the teacher in charge of the EarlyAct Club - Miss Campbell, parents of some of the children, The President of Rotary Club of Montego Bay, Kay-Ann Reuben and Vernella Fuller and Noel Harty from the Rotary Club of Montego Bay.

The children were in excellent spirits and left the school in waiting cars excited and well prepared for the visit.

On arrival at the home, the visitors were met by the manager of the home, who spoke with the children about the home, its work and ethos. The children were then taken to individual rooms where the elderly clients were waiting for them. The children, smartly turned out in their khaki uniforms and red ties, sang to the residents and read inspirational quotes and verses of Scripture, which they had written on decorated individual cards. The children read beautifully and left the cards with the residents when they had finished reading.

The residents were clearly delighted to see the children and to hear them sing and read and those who were able, sang along with the children. In fact one resident repeatedly requested more choruses, clapped and sung with the children. At the end there were profuse words of gratitude and demonstration of affection for the children.

The children presented to the home a basket of fruits, which had been donated by parents and teachers of Greenwood Preparatory School and the Rotary Club of Montego Bay.

The children and the adults in attendance were clearly moved by the experience.

DESCRIPTION OF EARLY ACT™

EarlyAct™ is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13. It is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in the township in which the school is located. The Early Act Club of Greenwood Prep is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Montego Bay. Our Club's Advisor is Dr. Vernella Fuller.

The mission and operation of EarlyAct™ are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact.

EarlyAct™ provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world.

At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful.
Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others. EarlyAct™ also promotes understanding and the building of friendships among the club members.

EarlyAct™ also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities. At present The Early Act Club of Greenwood Prep has undertaken a project to plant a vegetable garden in the school. Local, national and international projects are currently being decided.

Through EarlyAct™ students learn to take responsibility for real-life problems and to realize the significant impact of their involvement.

OBJECTIVES OF EARLY ACT™

The purpose of EarlyAct™ is to provide young students with the opportunities to participate in active citizenship in a culturally diverse democratic society within an interdependent world.

EarlyAct™ Partners in Character Education addresses the following objectives:

1. The students develop committed citizenship and leadership qualities by identifying and taking responsibilities for real life problems within their school, local and global communities.
2. The students realize the importance of respect, dignity and caring for all people by promoting good will and understanding through their active participation at school, local and community levels.
3. The students develop high student achievement by actively participating in various projects to improve the quality of life for their school, local and global communities. They work with the sponsoring Rotary club members as facilitators, mentors and role models.

GUIDELINES OF EarlyAct™
EarlyAct™ is a school-wide service club in which all students are members.

The EarlyAct™ Club is self-supporting and carries out three service projects annually—one each for their school and local communities, and one which furthers international understanding.

The EarlyAct™ Club of Greenwood Prep meets twice monthly for thirty minutes. Meetings are conducted by the EarlyAct™ officers. Meetings are conducted using parliamentary procedure, under the guidance of attending faculty and Rotarian advisors.

There are no dues. Monies for projects and activities are raised through EarlyAct™ Club activities. The EarlyAct™ Club submits an annual report to the sponsoring Rotary Club.
